Celebrate your own National Doughnut Day

You are able to celebrate National Doughnut Day even if you are on a diet. You don't have to visit Krispy Kreme locations, Dunkin Donuts locations, or even your local donut shop. Try making your own instead. Start by creating a basic sweet dough, then just fry it and top as you wish. Try this recipe if it's your very first time:

  • 1 egg
  • One quarter-cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey or agave nectar
  • 1/2 cup milk or milk substitute
  • 2 tablespoons melted shortening
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • two teaspoons baking powder, for rise
  • Melted butter or frosting or sugar for topping

Mix wet ingredients together, then add dry ingredients. Roll out the dough to half an inch thick, after chilling it until you can work with it. Fry the doughnuts in 375-degree vegetable oil for a few minutes. Drain the fried doughnuts, then sprinkle, glaze, or frost with your favorite topping.
