Circle contacts create huge eyes, huge controversy

In an effort to make their eyes look bigger, many people are ordering circle contact lenses. These lenses make the wearer’s eyes look much bigger by extending out past the iris. There is concern, though, since these circle contact lenses are really illegal within the United States.

Why would you wear circle contacts?

When worn, circle contact lenses make the eyes of the person wearing them look much bigger. Dilated eyes are often seen as more attractive. These widened eyes are seen in many fashion shoots, anime cartoons, and even popular music videos. Some circle contacts have color only around the edges, giving a supposedly more natural look. Other lenses, though, are deeply tinted with purple, pink, blue or other deep colors.

What the concern is with circle contact lenses

In no U.S. state is the purchase or sale of circle contact lenses legal. Without a prescription, you can’t legally buy or sell contacts within the United States. No contact lens maker creates circle contact lenses within the U.S.A.. The result of this is that anyone who wants circle contact lenses have to order them online. At $ 20 to $ 30 a pop, these lenses are expensive when shipped internationally.

The danger to your eyes

Because it is a grey-market item, circle contact lenses can pose a significant danger. A lens that fits incorrectly can cause severe infections when they scratch your eye. The lenses may also not meet standards of health or safety. If your eyes are damaged by illegal lenses, you’ve no recourse. You can order FDA approved cosmetic lenses if you go into an optometrist and get a fitted prescription.
